The Garage Cleanout Guide for LA and OC Homeowners

By The Bin & Beyond Team · Published September 8, 2026

Homeowner sorting boxes into keep, donate, and toss piles during a garage cleanout

Garage cleanouts fail for a predictable reason: people start sorting before they have decided where anything is going. By hour three the driveway is full, the garage looks worse, and everything gets pushed back inside. This is the sequence that avoids that.

Step 1: Book the Disposal First, Not Last

Decide before you touch a box how the pile leaves your property, and put a date on it. Schedule the city bulky pickup, reserve a truck, or book a hauler for the afternoon or the next morning. A cleanout with a deadline finishes. A cleanout without one becomes a reorganization.

Step 2: Empty Completely, Then Sort

Pull everything onto the driveway. Sorting in place does not work because you cannot see what you have, and you will keep things purely because moving them feels like effort. Start early: a driveway in Downey or Whittier is genuinely unpleasant to work on after 11 a.m. from May through October.

Step 3: Four Piles, No Maybe Pile

  • Keep: used in the last two years or has a specific upcoming use.
  • Donate: clean, working, and something a stranger would actually want.
  • Haul: broken, outdated, water damaged, or too worn to donate.
  • Hazardous: paint, solvents, oil, pesticides, propane, batteries, and e-waste.

A maybe pile is just a slower keep pile. If you cannot decide in five seconds, it goes to donate.

Step 4: Handle the Hazardous Pile Separately

This is the step most guides skip, and it is the one that stalls cleanouts in Southern California. Household hazardous waste and electronics cannot go in your bins, cannot go to city bulky pickup, and cannot legally be taken by a junk hauler. Both LA County and Orange County run free household hazardous waste and e-waste collection events for residents. Set those items aside in a separate corner and take them yourself.

  • Paint, stain, thinner, adhesives
  • Motor oil, antifreeze, car batteries
  • Pesticides, pool chemicals, propane tanks
  • Televisions, monitors, computers, and other e-waste

Step 5: Get the Haul Pile Off the Property Same Day

A haul pile that sleeps on the driveway has a strong tendency to shrink back into the garage. With Bin & Beyond the first item is $65 and each additional item is $15, and a typical garage cleanout runs a handful of items rather than a full truckload, so the bill is usually far smaller than people expect.

Step 6: Clean the Floor and the Bins

An empty garage is the only time you will ever easily reach the floor and the walls. Sweep, degrease the oil spots, and while you are at it, deal with the trash and recycling bins that have been living in there. A bin that has been sitting in a closed garage all summer is usually the actual source of the smell people blame on the garage itself.

We clean bins curbside with hot water pressure washing and capture the wastewater rather than sending it down the storm drain, and we can do it on the same visit as the haul.

Step 7: Put Things Back With a Rule

  • Nothing goes on the floor except vehicles and wheeled items.
  • Seasonal items go high, weekly items go at eye level.
  • One empty shelf stays empty as intake space, or the clutter creeps back.

Do this once properly and the next cleanout is an hour, not a weekend.

Book hauling and a bin cleaning together

Bundle the two and take $10 off. One visit, driveway and bins both handled.
