Move Out Junk Removal: What to Do With Everything You Are Not Taking
By The Bin & Beyond Team · Published September 12, 2026

Moves in Los Angeles and Orange County run on tight windows. Leases end on the last day of the month, escrow closes on a fixed date, and the movers only take what fits on the truck. Whatever is left becomes your problem at the worst possible moment.
Here is how to plan the leftover pile so it does not cost you a deposit or a delayed close.
Start With the Deadline, Work Backward
Write down the hard date: the final walkthrough, the key handover, or the close. Then put the junk pickup two days before that, not on the same day. Moving days slip. Pickup windows do not.
- Two weeks out: decide what is not coming and stage it in one room.
- One week out: list donations and schedule any charity pickup.
- Two days before handover: haul everything remaining.
- Day before: final sweep and bin cleaning if you want the deposit back cleanly.
Why Renters Lose Deposits on Junk
California allows a landlord to deduct the reasonable cost of removing items left behind from a security deposit, and those deductions are rarely charged at market rate. A couch left in a unit can come back as a line item several times what a scheduled pickup would have cost. Paying for removal yourself is almost always the cheaper outcome.
The same logic applies to sellers. Items left in a garage on closing day can hold up a final walkthrough, and nobody wants to renegotiate at that stage over a treadmill.
Clear the leftovers before the walkthrough
Pick a pickup day that lands before your handover. First item $65, each additional $15.

- Mattresses and bed frames, because the new place has new ones
- Desks, bookcases, and anything particleboard that will not survive another move
- Patio furniture and grills
- Broken electronics and an astonishing number of extension cords
- Half used paint, cleaning chemicals, and garage liquids
That last line is important. Paint and chemicals cannot go with a hauler or in a bin. Both counties run free household hazardous waste drop offs for residents, and you need to plan a trip for those items rather than leaving them in a closet for the next tenant.
Donate What Still Has Life
Moving is the highest yield donation moment of anyone's year. Furniture that is clean and sound, unopened pantry goods, working small appliances, and unworn clothing all have easy homes in LA and OC. Our guide on what to throw away versus donate covers where the cutoff usually falls, and donating first shrinks the hauling bill directly.
Do Not Forget the Bins
A move generates more trash in one week than the house produces in a month, and bins get overloaded, leaked in, and left dirty. If you are trying to hand over a clean property, a curbside bin cleaning at the end of the move is a small cost that changes how the whole place reads at a walkthrough.
We can haul the leftovers and clean the bins on the same visit, with $10 off when the two are booked together.
A Realistic Budget
Most move out pickups we run are between three and eight items. At $65 for the first and $15 for each additional, that is roughly $95 to $170, with no truckload guessing and no weight surcharges. Knowing the number up front is usually what lets people finally schedule it.
