How Much Does It Cost to Haul Away a Couch in Los Angeles?
By The Bin & Beyond Team · Published September 2, 2026

A couch is the single most common item people call us about, and it is also the item most likely to sit in a garage for six months because nobody wants to deal with it. The good news is that getting rid of one in Los Angeles or Orange County is usually cheaper and faster than people assume.
Here is the honest breakdown of every option, what each one really costs, and how to pick the one that fits your week.
Option 1: Your City's Free Bulky Item Pickup
Most cities in LA County and Orange County offer a limited number of free bulky item collections per household each year through the hauler that already services your trash bins. On paper that makes it free. In practice there are three catches worth knowing before you count on it.
- You have to schedule it, and in busy months the next available date can be one to three weeks out.
- There are item limits per pickup, so one couch plus a mattress plus a dresser can push you over.
- You still have to move the couch to the curb yourself, which is the part most people cannot do alone.
If you are not in a hurry, you are physically able to get the item out to the curb, and you have only one or two pieces, free city pickup is genuinely the right call. We tell people that regularly.
Option 2: Renting a Truck and Driving to the Landfill
A pickup truck rental plus fuel plus landfill or transfer station disposal fees usually lands somewhere in the range of a professional pickup once you add it all up, and that is before you count your own Saturday. Add the risk of scraping a doorframe or hurting your back on a sleeper sofa and the math gets worse, not better.
Option 3: Hiring a Junk Hauler
With Bin & Beyond, the first item is $65 and each additional item is $15. A couch counts as one item. We do the lifting, we pull it from inside the house or the side yard, and it is gone on your scheduled day rather than whenever a route has room.
If you are already booking a bin cleaning, hauling bundled with that visit is $10 off, which is the cheapest path when you need both.

- Sleeper sofas and sectionals, because they weigh far more than a standard three seater.
- Third floor walkups with no elevator.
- Items stored behind other items, where the crew has to clear a path first.
- Hazardous material mixed into the pile, which we cannot legally take.
We quote per item rather than per truckload specifically so a single couch does not get billed like a full cleanout. Truckload pricing is common in this industry and it is where people get surprised.
Can You Donate It Instead?
If the couch is clean, structurally sound, and free of pet damage, tears, and odor, several LA and OC charities will take it, and some will pick it up. That is always the better outcome. If it has been in a garage through two Southern California summers, most donation centers will decline it, and hauling is the realistic path. Our guide on what to throw away versus donate walks through where the line usually falls.
How to Decide in 30 Seconds
- Couch is in good shape and you can wait: donate it.
- One item, you can move it to the curb, no rush: use free city bulky pickup.
- Heavy, awkward, indoors, or you need it gone on a specific day: hire a hauler.
- You have three or more items: hauling is almost always cheaper per item than any alternative.
