Mattress Disposal in LA and Orange County: Every Option Explained
By The Bin & Beyond Team · Published September 4, 2026

A mattress is the one item that defeats almost every normal disposal habit. It will not fit in a bin, it will not fit in most cars, and dumping one illegally in California carries real fines. Here is how to handle it properly in Los Angeles and Orange County.
Why Mattresses Are Treated Differently
California runs a statewide mattress recycling program funded by a fee you already paid when you bought the mattress. That program exists because mattresses are bulky, they take up enormous landfill volume, and roughly 75 percent of the material inside one can be recovered: steel springs, foam, wood, and fiber.
In practical terms, that means you usually have a free or low cost recycling route available, and it also means you should never leave a mattress in an alley. Illegal dumping enforcement is active across LA County and the citation costs far more than a pickup.
Option 1: Free Mattress Recycling Drop Off
Participating recycling collection sites across Southern California accept used mattresses and box springs at no charge, generally with a limit per visit. This is the cheapest option by far if you have a truck or a van and a free morning.
- Bring a truck, SUV with the seats down, or a trailer. A sedan will not work.
- Mattresses must be dry and free of heavy soiling or infestation, or the site can refuse them.
- Call ahead. Site participation and hours change.
Option 2: Retailer Haul Away on Delivery
If you are buying a replacement, almost every mattress retailer in LA and OC offers haul away of the old one, sometimes free and sometimes for a modest fee. Timing is the trick here: it only works if you schedule the removal for the same delivery window. Miss it and you are back to the other options.
Option 3: City Bulky Item Pickup
Most cities in both counties include mattresses in their annual free bulky item collections. You schedule it with the hauler that services your trash bins, then set the mattress at the curb the night before. Expect a wait of a week or more in peak months, and expect an item limit per pickup.
One local wrinkle worth planning for: a mattress left at the curb during a Southern California marine layer morning can soak up enough moisture overnight to be refused as soiled. Wrap it in plastic if it will sit out.

This is the option people choose when the mattress is upstairs, when there is a box spring and a frame alongside it, or when the free routes simply do not line up with a move out date. With Bin & Beyond the first item is $65 and each additional item is $15, so a mattress and box spring together is $80 and we carry both out ourselves.
We take the load to the appropriate recycling or transfer facility rather than the nearest dumpster, which is the part that matters when the alternative is a fly tipped mattress on a residential street.
What About a Mattress With Bed Bugs?
Be upfront about it. Infested mattresses must be sealed in plastic before they leave the room, and most recycling sites will not accept them. Tell any hauler before they arrive so the crew can handle it correctly instead of spreading the problem to a truck.
