What Can You Throw Away vs Donate? A Junk Removal Guide for LA and OC Homeowners

By The Bin & Beyond Team · Published August 28, 2026

Household items and boxes sorted in a garage before donation and disposal

Most garage cleanouts in Los Angeles and Orange County produce three piles, not two: things a charity will happily take, things a charity will politely refuse, and things that require a special disposal path. Sorting correctly before anything leaves the driveway saves you a wasted trip and keeps usable goods out of the landfill.

What Local Charities Generally Accept

  • Clean clothing, shoes, and linens in wearable condition
  • Working small appliances, kitchenware, and unbroken dishware
  • Sturdy furniture with no rips, stains, odors, or structural damage
  • Books, DVDs, board games with all pieces, and unopened toys
  • Working electronics manufactured within roughly the last decade
  • Unused building materials, tools, and fixtures, which ReStore locations across LA and OC actively want

The general test is simple: would you give it to a friend without apologizing for its condition? If yes, donate it. Larger thrift operations in the region will often arrange pickup for furniture, though scheduling can run several weeks out during spring and summer.

What Charities Almost Always Refuse

  • Mattresses and box springs, refused by nearly every donation center in California
  • Cribs, car seats, and helmets, which cannot be resold due to safety regulations
  • Upholstered furniture with rips, stains, pet odor, or any sign of bed bugs
  • Large console TVs and CRT monitors
  • Partially used paint, chemicals, cleaners, and automotive fluids
  • Anything with visible mold or water damage

Dropping refused items at a donation door after hours is illegal dumping in most Southern California municipalities and creates a disposal cost for the charity. If it is on this list, it needs a different path.

Have a pile that is not donatable?

Bulk item pickup starts at $65 for the first item and $15 for each additional item, hauled straight from your curb or garage.

What Needs a Special Disposal Path

Household hazardous waste

Paint, solvents, pesticides, motor oil, batteries, and fluorescent tubes cannot go in a curbside bin or on a hauling truck. Both Los Angeles County and Orange County operate free household hazardous waste collection centers for residents, and both counties publish current locations and hours online. Plan a separate trip for these.

Electronics

California classifies most electronics as e waste, which is banned from landfill disposal. Many retailers and county collection events accept them at no cost.

Mattresses

California's mattress recycling program funds free drop off at participating sites, and many LA and OC cities include a limited number of free bulky item pickups per year through their waste hauler. Worth checking your city's program before paying anyone.

What Bulk Hauling Is Actually For

Hauling makes sense when the volume, the timing, or the physical difficulty makes the free options impractical. A single mattress you can drop off yourself is not worth paying for. A garage full of broken furniture, yard debris, and moving leftovers that needs to be gone before a walkthrough on Friday is exactly what hauling is for.

We accept furniture, mattresses, appliances, yard debris, cardboard, and general household junk across Los Angeles and Orange County. We do not take hazardous waste or construction debris. If you are also getting bins cleaned, bundling the two takes $10 off the hauling.

Clear it out in one visit

First item $65, each additional item $15, and $10 off when bundled with a bin cleaning.
